Well it was finally time to go over Last Dollar Road (LDR). After passing the warning signs about road conditions, we started along LDR from Telluride. We first stopped just above the Telluride airport, which is a beautiful view. I also loved the fact that the West end of the runway ends at the edge of a huge cliff. Better make sure they have enough speed to take off, or else!
Without a doubt, the drive over LDR was the most beautiful drive I have ever taken in my life, and it’s not even close. The picture above is from the Telluride side of the pass, looking at Mt. Wilson. Standing along LDR and looking over this panoramic view is absolutely breathtaking. Each time we stopped, I wanted to just stay there and keep looking, but we had to press on.
I could describe each spot along LDR, but it wouldn’t be adequate. You really need to do it for yourself. Especially when the aspens are turning. Our timing was just about perfect, which was the first weekend of October. My only regret from this day was that we didn’t get up early to get on LDR for sunrise, and that we had to move on from LDR before sunset, both of which are the best times for landscape photography. Next time, I will definitely spend more time there.
As for the road itself, let me just say that we made it. There were several rough spots along the way with large rocks that had to be carefully navigated, and there was a small stream or two that we had to go through. We scrapped the bottom the Altima a few times, and I think we lost a few pop rivets along the way too. But major credit to Scott for not only allowing us to go over LDR in his car at all, but his expert driving skills came in handy!
